Four Companies Selected by Telekom Malaysia for Broadband Equipment Supply in Malaysia

Malaysian telecom operator Telekom Malaysia has selected four foreign companies for its HSBB (High-Speed Broadband) project, Malaysia's Business Times reported on November 2, adding that the project is valued at approximately 11.3 billion Ringgit (US$3.29 billion; US$1 = 3.43 Ringgit). The four winners of the project included French Alcatel-Lucent, and three Chinese companies, Huawei, ZTE, and Fiberhome. In addition, Telekom Malaysia stated that as part of the tender criteria the company has demanded these four foreign companies to collaborate with a Malaysian company while providing their proprietary technologies and equipment that are not currently available in Malaysia, according to the same source.

Under the agreements separately signed with Telekom Malaysia, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent won the majority share of the project, participating in three out of four HSBB-related packages. Telekom Malaysia's MSNA (Multi-Service Access Network) package will be assigned to Huawei and ZTE ; Alcatel-Lucent and Fiberhome will be in charge of the SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy)/DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) package; Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent will be in charge of the FTTH (Fiber-to-the Home) package; Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel-Lucent will also team up for the deployment of the metro-Ethernet. Meanwhile, it is reported that five Malaysia-based companies has been selected by the said foreign companies as sub-contractors.
